A Forged Marriage Certificate, a Real Embryo

A forged marriage certificate helped a couple clear every checkpoint on the road to IVF. The embryo is real. So, eventually, is the baby. The stamped document sitting in their file, however, never was.

Most fertility clinics in China still ask to see a marriage certificate, yet few can tell a good forgery from a genuine one on the spot. The fraud usually surfaces only when the parents try to register the newborn's household record, sometimes months later.

Reproductive law is still playing catch-up. Paperwork is easy to fake, and government databases don't always talk to each other. The result looks a lot like a real-life game of cat and mouse, played out one tiny form at a time.
