China's prefab homes just broke the internet. So what's the draw?

Prefab homes are having a moment on Chinese social feeds. Whole units roll off factory lines, get trucked in, and crane into place—collapsing the wait time of traditional construction into a matter of days.

For a generation of younger buyers, the appeal is straightforward: clear pricing, predictable timelines, and layouts you can mix and match like building blocks. What once read as a synonym for “temporary site housing” is now being reframed as a turnkey lifestyle product.

The hype, of course, comes with footnotes. Land permits, site access for cranes, and what happens after move-in day are still the unglamorous sticking points. Whoever nails the after-sales experience first may end up owning the category.
