In the first half of the year, renewables crossed the 40% threshold of China's total electricity output for the first time.
China's power grid quietly reshuffled its cast of characters in the first half of the year. Numbers released at a National Energy Administration briefing show that renewables now account for more than 40% of the country's total electricity output — a first.
The lift came from a team effort. Wind, solar, and hydro all pitched in, with new capacity coming online and cooperative weather giving the green sources an extra push. Coal-fired power's share of the mix kept shrinking in response.
That single 40% reads like a snapshot of years of energy transition. As more of our daily electricity comes from sun and wind, the background hum of the grid is quietly turning a little greener.
