WeChat's translator quietly levels up
A growing number of users say WeChat's built-in translator is finally keeping up — and in some cases, beating standalone apps.
Tucked inside WeChat is a small but useful trick: long-press a foreign-language message and it gets translated on the spot. Lately, users have been giving the feature a second look — and finding it noticeably smoother than before, with far less of the clunky "machine-translation" feel.
The shift didn't happen out of nowhere. Earlier versions leaned on outside services: Youdao handled English-to-Chinese, while Microsoft covered most other languages, with tiny credit lines for each provider visible in chat. Those labels have since been replaced by a single "WeChat Translate" tag, suggesting the platform has rolled out its own in-house model.
With dedicated translation apps a tap away, why bother inside a chat window? Probably because WeChat's version is just convenient enough — and quietly getting better.
